Barney American Staffordshire Terrier Adult - Adoption, Rescue for sale in Auburn, California

Barney is the absolute squishy, soft, and sweet 2-3 year old bully mix EVER!

Barney is pure love.

He adores people and he simply cannot get enough of them.

If you are seeking a true companion, Barney is your guy.

He will be by your side and be your best buddy for the rest of his life.

Hes a shyer guy, so he does need to feel safe before he goes exploring but he just needs an understanding adopter who will go at his pace.

We dont believe Barneys previous life was very good because hes fearful of new men when he meets them and when exploring a new area he will often low crawl and move very slowing, making to sure its safe.

Hes also very sensitive to voice corrections.

Its likely Barneys previous caregivers were not very kind to him.

But Barney is now in foster care and getting all the love we can give him to make up for lost time.

Barneys heart is so big and despite whatever hes been through, all he wants is someone to love.

Hes a true bully through and through and a perfect example of what makes bullies such amazing dogs!

Barney is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, heart worm negative and house and crate trained.

Child appropriate? Barney can fearful of new things and experiences and he hasnt been around children to our knowledge so the best guess we can give is kids over 10 would be ok.

Hes very sweet but he still mouths when excited and frequently paws at you for attention so we feel hes best suited for kids he cant accidentally harm.

Other dog appropriate? Barney played with other dogs at the shelter, even a very exuberant female, and he did well.

He was rushed by two off leash dogs and got into a fight but he was the only one injured.

We think his response was a fear response because he had no problem playing with dogs one on one.

We think hed enjoy a calmer, medium energy dog of the same size as him.

Cat appropriate? Barney appears to have a quite a prey drive toward the farm animals at his foster home so because of this we are thinking cats might not be an option for him.

Its not out of the question and he hasnt been formally cat tested so we are just guessing on this one.

How is he with strangers? Barney is a little reserved with strangers, especially men.

He will spooky bark at new men but once hes given some treats and allowed to approach the men without the men trying to pet him and get in his space, hes completely fine.

Once hes met the man and determined hes ok, Barney is all love from there on out.

His fear is only upon the initial meeting.

He does fine meeting new women.

What is his play style? When playing with other dogs Barney will engage in play and chase and will tolerate a dog being a little pushy but he seems to prefer to play a bit calmer.

When playing with people Barney can get overexcited and this causes him to mouth so keeping the energy lower key is best for him.

Hed much rather sit and get pets and rubs vs. play anyway.

Does he like toys? Barney loves his toys!

He likes stuffies and rubber squeaker toys and he doesnt really destroy them.

He really likes any toy you can stuff with treats and peanut butter like Kongs and other food puzzles.

Does he like water? Barney has not been around water during his time in foster so we arent sure on this one.

Does he like car rides? Barney rides well in the car and likes to look around.

He does prefer to climb his way to the front seat to sit next to his person, but thats because he loves people so much.

He will also lay down in the back seat and relax after a bit.

Exercise level needed? Barney would do fine with daily walks and getting to run around the yard.

He does need to get some energy out, but hes not going to need hours of exercise a day.

He loves to bird hunt so running around the yard looking for birds helps get energy out too and hes very inquisitive.

He is not a dog you could take running with you but he could make a good hiking companion for someone.

Behavior issues?

As mentioned previously, when excited Barney can mouth a bit and occasionally his kisses turn to teeth but he is continuing to receive training around this and needs to be reminded that its not ok.

He does get a bit squirmy when putting his harness on or when leashing so hes working on that as well.

He just needs patience with this.

Barney does have some separation anxiety, which means when home, he must be kept crated in a heavy-duty crate because he does search endlessly to get out of wherever he is if left alone.

Barney can escape any outside kennel so he should not be left alone outside ever.

Having an adopter who works from home or where someone is home more often then not would help this issue.

Medical issues? Barney tends to have running eyes but there doesnt appear to be anything wrong with his eyes.

A vet has checked him and its just something that he has.

It doesnt cause any issues, we just wipe away his eye boogers!

Skills? Barney knows sit and hes working very hard on wait before going in and out of doorways.

Special/endearing things? Barney is SO soft that youll want to spend hours just petting him and rubbing his squishy neck!

Its a good bonus that Barney loves being petted because the two go hand in hand!

He loves love and he loves being with his people and hell make an amazing companion to someone who is truly looking for a companion.

Barney is sensitive and can be shy and this just makes him even sweeter.

He longs to be a part of someones family and get to hang on the couch.

In his foster home he has is somewhat isolated due to the other foster dogs in the home, and Barney hates this because he just wants to be a part of the family, all the time.

Barney has the prettiest gold tinted hair and we joke that hes gold plated!

He has so much love to give someone and hes so happy each day to see people that we just know hes going to make someone super happy some day.

Ideal home? Barneys ideal home would be one where someone is home often and where he wont be left along for long periods of time.

Barney needs a home that is willing to invest in a heavy-duty crate to help Barney with his separation anxiety when they are gone.

The ideal home would be one that has a secure, 6 ft. solid wood fence in the back yard because Barney can climb chain link and hes a master escape artist!

We havent seen him climb a wood fence so we think that will do the trick.

Barney would love to be the star of the show and be the only pet in the family but he would likely be ok with another friendly, calm dog.

Barney needs a home who will be patient with him and allow him to be the house dog that he is as hes not really the kind of dog who wants to go to public places.

Due to his wariness of the world, hes just happier being home.
